big boy bed!

For any of you who have spent any amount of time with Dylan, you know that he is a very active toddler. In fact, he's always been incredibly active. From the time he was in my womb until now, he keeps us on our toes and makes us very tired by each day's end.

A few months ago, Dylan decided to climb out of his crib without giving us any warning. Until that time, he let us know he would be making his way out of his crib in a matter of moments by with alarming protest cries that let us know he wanted us to come and get him out. Once we were there, he would jump out and we'd catch him. Well, the night he climbed out silently (aside from the loud "thump" we heard) was the night his crib mattress went on the floor for good. It was a tough adjustment for him (but maybe more so for us!) since he had a newfound freedom of roaming his room at night and during naptime. A friend of ours from church had a spare mesh bed rail which we used after a couple days and that seemed to help tremendously since Dylan no longer fell off the mattress quite so often (like I said, he's a mover!). A couple weeks ago, Jon and I decided to buy him a twin size mattress so that he could officially graduate to the "big boy bed". The picture shows Dylan adjusting to this new piece of furniture in his bedroom and Jon taking a rest after moving it up the stairs. Dylan has adjusted pretty well to this change. He typically gets out of bed a couple times each night but we're hoping this will pass. He's confined to his room since we close the door at bedtime. Initially, we placed a gate in his doorway but he climbed over that as well. Hence, the door remains closed at night time but stays open at nap time.

The timing of this transition is actually great considering we'll have a new baby in the house in less than three months. Jon moved the crib directly across the hall to the baby's room and Dylan has responded as though this is always the way it's been. What a relief!
